Denies request for a preliminary injunction blocking private grant program.
U.S. District Judge Thomas Thrash denied a request to temporarily block venture capitalist grant programs from awarding funding exclusively to businesses run by black women. The request for a preliminary injunction was made by Edward Blum’s American Alliance for Equal Rights, the same group that won a case against affirmative action in college admissions in the Supreme Court this year.
The group had asked the judge to temporarily block the “racially exclusive program” organized by the Fearless Fund, a small venture capital organization aimed at addressing inequality within the venture capital sector. Judge Thrash, a senior judge in the Northern Georgia U.S. District Court, said that the activity of a private funding firm was protected by the First Amendment, and denied the request.
